The Future of Agriculture: Vertical Farms to Sustainable Aquaculture

New maps show the risk of sea level rises to Australian cities

[News.com] SAY sayonara to Sydney airport, farewell to Fremantle and bye to Byron Bay.
A series of maps has graphically illustrated how Australia could be affected by climate change and rising sea levels. And it looks like many of our major towns and cities could be getting a lot soggier.
Hobart Airport would be underwater, Melbourne’s Southbank submerged and the WACA in Perth would be inundated.
Famous sea side resorts like Byron Bay, Port Douglas, Noosa and the Gold Coast are in danger of seeing the sea get a whole lot closer for comfort.
A climate expert has said rising sea levels globally could displace “tens of millions of people”.
The new maps come from Costal Risk Australia run by Western Australia business management consultants NGIS. The data is fished from the US’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA to show which areas will be at risk from a “business as usual” scenario of a 2 metre sea-level rise by 2100.
Just by putting in your suburb name into the Coastal Risk Australia, you can see if you area is at risk of flooding.
Website co-creator Nathan Eaton said that with more than 80 per cent of Australians living near the coast, it was critical for people to appreciate what rising sea levels in the decades to come could mean for their communities.
However, in some areas its likely even a 2 metre sea rise will be surpassed. Climate scientists have pointed to parts of northern and Western Australia where rises could be higher.
The Torres Strait Islands have experienced regular king tides, an area which rarely got any of the monster tides in the past.
Professor John Church from the University of NSW’S Climate Change Research Centre said flooding to the measure forecast would cause catastrophic problems for many Australians. Read More

The Arctic Doomsday Seed Vault Flooded. Thanks, Global Warming

[Wired] It was designed as an impregnable deep-freeze to protect the world’s most precious seeds from any global disaster and ensure humanity’s food supply forever. But the Global Seed Vault, buried in a mountain deep inside the Arctic circle, has been breached after global warming produced extraordinary temperatures over the winter, sending meltwater gushing into the entrance tunnel.
The vault is on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen and contains almost a million packets of seeds, each a variety of an important food crop. When it was opened in 2008, the deep permafrost through which the vault was sunk was expected to provide “failsafe” protection against “the challenge of natural or man-made disasters”.
But soaring temperatures in the Arctic at the end of the world’s hottest ever recorded year led to melting and heavy rain, when light snow should have been falling. “It was not in our plans to think that the permafrost would not be there and that it would experience extreme weather like that,” said Hege Njaa Aschim, from the Norwegian government, which owns the vault.
“A lot of water went into the start of the tunnel and then it froze to ice, so it was like a glacier when you went in,” she told the Guardian. Fortunately, the meltwater did not reach the vault itself, the ice has been hacked out, and the precious seeds remain safe for now at the required storage temperature of -18°C.
But the breach has questioned the ability of the vault to survive as a lifeline for humanity if catastrophe strikes. “It was supposed to [operate] without the help of humans, but now we are watching the seed vault 24 hours a day,” Aschim said. “We must see what we can do to minimise all the risks and make sure the seed bank can take care of itself.” Read More

Research: Political Polarization Is Changing How Americans Work and Shop

[Harvard Business Review] After the bruising and contentious 2016 U.S. presidential election, it’s not surprising that Americans’ evaluations of members of the opposite political party have reached an all-time low. According to data from the Pew Research Center, 45% of Republicans and 41% of Democrats think the other party is so dangerous that it is a threat to the health of the nation. This animus has spilled over into social networks: According to a HuffPost/YouGov poll, nearly half of Americans got into an argument with someone (a friend, family member, coworker, etc.) about the election last year. Fifty years ago few people expressed any anger when asked how they would feel if their child married someone from the other party. Today, one-third of Democrats and nearly half of Republicans would be deeply upset. On item after item, Americans not only disagree on the issues but also increasingly personally dislike those from the other party.
This is a phenomenon scholars call affective polarization. Political scientists have attributed a number of important consequences to the increase of affective polarization in the United States, chief among them increased gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, DC. But much less is known about whether affective polarization changes how we interact outside of politics. Do these partisan sentiments affect economic exchanges between individuals from opposing parties?
This question is especially timely given recent, post-election discussions of American consumers either supporting or boycotting companies for their association with the opposing party. For example, the group Grab Your Wallet has suggested that people boycott several companies over their ties to the Trump administration, including L.L. Bean and Macy’s, and the #DeleteUber hashtag spread after Uber failed to support New York taxi drivers’ protest of the administration’s travel ban. Ivanka Trump’s brand has been a political football used by both the left and the right. Are these simply highly publicized but isolated incidents, or do they represent a broader trend of partisanship shaping how people make economic decisions even in the absence of a public campaign calling for a specific boycott? Century-Long Glacier Study May Help Us Crack Climate Change

A scientist restarts longest glacier study with sketched maps and bear mace. See how the landscape has changed in that time.

[National Geographic] It's not often an ecologist gets to play sleuth in so adventurous a fashion—picking through musty papers in the Midwest for 100-year-old hand-drawn maps that lead through dense Alaskan underbrush populated by wolves and brown bears. But that's how scientist Brian Buma tracked down the work of a legend—a godfather of modern ecology so prominent in his field that the Ecological Society of America has an award named after him.
Buma, a University of Alaska, Southeast, assistant professor, was hunting for nine tiny patches of land in the enormous wilderness of Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park. These square-meter-sized plots first mapped in 1916 by botanist William Skinner Cooper were central to one of the longest-running natural experiments in science, and to our understanding one of the most-studied and dynamic places in the country.
Cooper knew the rich history of Glacier Bay, had read the expedition diaries of Capt. George Vancouver from the 18th century, had followed naturalist John Muir's canoe trips, when Muir compared its geology to Yosemite Valley's. Cooper even had led the charge to have the region declared a national monument, 55 years before it became a national park in 1980.
But the hidden patches where Cooper had done groundbreaking work that still makes it into college textbooks somehow had been lost to time. Buma aimed to find it.
"I grew up with Indiana Jones and I've always liked discovery and finding old things, chasing down forgotten places, pushing the boundaries," Buma says. "This had it all."
So, last summer, a century after Cooper began, Buma carted historical photos, a metal detector, and bear mace, and, funded by a National Geographic grant, he uncovered Cooper's worksites. Now he's using them to reframe our thinking about the surprising ways plant communities may shift with climate change. In a paper published Thursday by the Ecological Society of America, he showed, as Cooper before him, that as glacial ice in the bay recedes faster than almost anywhere on Earth, new shrubs and forests are springing up, just not as simply and uniformly as one might expect. What does the spike in the Schumann resonance mean?

[Dr. Joe Dispenza] In 1952, German physicist and professor W.O. Schumann hypothesized there were measurable electromagnetic waves in the atmosphere that existed in the cavity (or space) between the surface of the earth and the ionosphere. According to NASA, the ionosphere is an abundant layer of electrons, ionized atoms, and molecules that stretches from approximately 30 miles above the surface of the earth to the edge of space, at about 600 miles. This dynamic region grows and shrinks (and further divides into sub-regions) based on solar conditions and is a critical link in the chain of Sun-Earth interactions. It’s this “celestial power station” that makes radio communications possible.
In 1954, Schumann and H.L. König confirmed Schumann’s hypothesis by detecting resonances at a main frequency of 7.83 Hz; thus, the “Schumann resonance” was established by measuring global electromagnetic resonances generated and excited by lightning discharges in the ionosphere. While this phenomenon is caused by lightning in the atmosphere, many are not aware of the importance of this frequency as a tuning fork for life. In other words, it acts as a background frequency influencing the biological circuitry of the mammalian brain.
As far back as we know, the Earth’s electromagnetic field has been protecting all living things with this natural frequency pulsation of 7.83 Hz. You can think of this as the earth’s heartbeat. The ancient Indian Rishis referred to this as OHM, or the incarnation of pure sound. Whether by coincidence or not, the frequency of 7.83 Hz also happens to be a very powerful frequency used with brain wave entrainment as it’s associated with low levels of alpha and the upper range of theta brain wave states. This frequency has also been associated with high levels of hypnotizability, suggestibility, meditation, and increased HGH (human growth hormone) levels, in addition to increased cerebral blood-flow levels while this frequency is being stimulated.
It would seem then that our nervous system can be influenced by the earth’s electromagnetic field. Maybe that’s why being in nature has always been so restorative and healing. Disconnecting from a typical city setting by reducing our exposure to crowds, traffic, work, and routine life—and instead getting out in natural surroundings—can slow our brain waves down from the aggressive, vigilant, anxious, and impatient states that are seen in higher ranges of beta brain waves to more restorative alpha waves.
On January 31, 2017, for the first time in recorded history, the Schumann resonance reached frequencies of 36+ Hz. It was considered an anomaly when in 2014 this frequency rose from its usual 7.83 Hz to somewhere in the 15-25 Hz levels—so a jump from 7.83 Hz to 36+ Hz is a big deal. That’s more than a five-fold increase in resonant frequency levels. What does this mean to us as inhabitants of Mother Earth? According to neuroscience, frequency recordings of 36+ Hz in the human brain are more associated with a stressed nervous system than a relaxed and healthy one. Read More

Deep State vs. Head of State : Tr. Pluto opposes the USA Sun

(This is a terrific article by astrologer Edith Hathaway.)
[Edith Hathaway] Transiting Pluto opposite anyone’s natal Sun is an arresting phenomenon, confronting the person’s very identity and legitimacy on deep levels. There are no political or geographical boundaries to Pluto’s realm, just as with Plutonian elements such as radioactivity. Expand the implications to cover the first-ever Pluto opposition to the USA Sun. Pluto’s orbit is 248.4 years, and the Sun in the chart of a nation-state is the President, or Head of State; also the presidency.
When one of the outer planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, is within a few degrees of a key point in a chart, that gets my attention – even if these planets are not considered an integral part of classical Vedic astrology. They also do not rule over zodiacal signs or nakshatras. But currently, transiting Pluto is within a 3 degree orb opposite the USA Sun (Kelleher chart) at 22:38 Gemini, using the sidereal zodiac/Lahiri ayanamsha. This occurred for much of 2015 and 2016 and runs all through 2017 up to Jan. 2018, coming also later in 2018: August to November (i.e. continuing within 3 degrees opposite the USA Sun). Previously, this transit covered the last two years of the Obama presidency and the entire period of the controversial 2016 U.S. Presidential primaries and election. We will focus here primarily on what this means for tr. Pluto opposite the USA Sun in 2017, with Donald J. Trump in the presidency as of Jan. 20, 2017. Additionally, we take a brief look at the years when tr. Pluto was in Virgo in the USA 10th house (the presidency), and when tr. Pluto was in Scorpio in the USA 12th house on Sept. 11, 2001.
When a planetary station occurs within a 3° orb of an important aspect, the effects are even more intense. In 2017 there are two close Pluto stations opposing the USA Sun: tr. Pluto turns Stationary Retrograde April 20, 2017 at 25:18 Sagittarius (2°40’ orb to USA Sun), and Stationary Direct Sept. 28, 2017 at 22:45 Sagittarius (07’ orb to USA Sun). The chart below shows the two Pluto stations in 2017 relative to the USA chart. (The Kelleher chart is used throughout.)
While we know that the U.S. President is represented by the Sun and the 10th house in the national chart, it is not always clear what or who Pluto represents. That is because Pluto refers to subterranean forces, often criminal, that do not want to be seen or identified while they do their work. Pluto correlates astrologically to radical changes and transformations that are often forced on us, much like in the myth of Pluto (also the Greek Hades) – who wanted the young Persephone, and in order to have her, he kidnapped her and brought her down to his kingdom in the underworld. But Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the earth and the harvest. In mourning for her only child, she causes all the plants to wither and die. When Persephone is allowed to return to earth for half the year, the plants flourish once again. She then returns to Pluto in the underworld and the same thing happens all over again, year in and year out.
As mineral wealth is underground, Pluto is closely associated with immense wealth, also on a positive level with depth perception. Pluto’s tactics can be ruthless in his desire to preserve power, wealth and financial status. Pluto goes after whatever he wants in unlawful, unaccountable ways, with usually hidden operations. Known as the planet forcing radical changes, he tends to bring elimination and renewal. A total breakdown may happen before a rebuilding process can occur. As we see here, Plutonian forces can be easily identified with concepts such as the “Deep State.” Read More

Authentic Mediumship – A Dying Art?

[The Otherside Press] My dear father died suddenly in 1980 – three months after assuring me that we would live forever. The shock catapulted me into a state of impossible grief and an unwitting spiritual odyssey in search of answers. Tough gig for a seventeen-year-old. Having grown up in a family where love was our religion, I had minuscule knowledge of death and flatly refused to accept the searing finality of it all.
Back in the day, I lived in Adelaide, South Australia, where talk of death and mediumship was taboo and soothsayers were written off as crackpots. So was I, for a while.
My first beacon of light arrived in the form of a book called ‘Many Mansions’ – an introduction to the fascinating world of eminent ‘sleeping prophet’ Edgar Cayce. Several enlightening books followed, including Dr. Raymond Moody’s groundbreaking ‘Life after Life.’ Spiritual books became my elixir.
The profound healing experience that accompanies authentic, evidential mediumship, arrived some twenty years later complete with a sketched portrait of my father. It completely floored me. The grievous years in between were akin to a train wreck. The profound healing experience that accompanies authentic, evidential mediumship, arrived some twenty years later,
Fast forward to present day cyberspace and the burgeoning ‘psychic medium industry.’ These Google results paint quite a picture:
  • Psychic medium’ = 3.9 million results
  • ‘Psychic medium google listings’ =6.5 million results
  • ‘Authentic psychic mediums’ = 1.2 million results
  • ‘Fake psychic mediums’ = 286,000 results.
  • ‘Spiritual healing’ = 63.8 million results.
Who would have guessed that mediumship would morph from taboo to trendy? An emerging breed of ‘psychic glitterati’ starring in stage and TV shows, hawking weekend workshops and online certificate courses that have us believe anyone can be a psychic medium. Death has never been so glamorous.
Perhaps I shouldn’t write about such things. Perhaps I shouldn’t have spent time at the Arthur Findlay College (UK) where I witnessed highly-attuned mediums provide detailed, evidential information to perfect strangers, right down to the full name, address, and red-checked tablecloth in the deceased person’s kitchen. Where ego-driven students strutted their stuff on stage before being swiftly cut down to size and counseled about the art of true mediumship. Where an entertaining yet overtly cynical workshop tutor said: ‘Only 1% of students have the gift of mediumship – everyone else is wasting their money.’
In my experience, authentic, highly-attuned mediums have been few and far between. I’ve learned that psychic and medium are two separate things, and psychics are not necessarily spiritual. We are all born with psychic abilities that can be developed over time, while mediumship is a different ball game. A ‘wannabe’ can spend thirty years developing mediumship skills and still be ‘mediocre’. There’s no harm in trying. Read More

Mega-Quakes Can Cause Earth’s Crust to Rip Open and Snap Shut

[Live Science] Like a crocodile's jaw opening and snapping shut, Earth's crust can rip apart and then violently close back up during an earthquake, a new study finds. The discovery refutes previous claims that this kind of phenomenon was impossible, and the new research could potentially require that current seismic maps be redrawn.
The study focused on a particular paradox associated with thrust faults, a crack in Earth’s crust, where geologic forces are slowly pushing a huge slab of continental crust up and over an oceanic layer.
"For a long time, it was assumed that thrust faults, subduction zone faults being a class of such faults, could not have a large amount of slip close to the Earth's surface," said Harsha Bhat, a research scientist at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris and co-author of the new study with California Institute of Technology graduate student Vahe Gabuchian. [The 10 Biggest Earthquakes in History]
The assumption was made because as the continental slab grinds over the oceanic one below, it scrapes off the soft surface clay and leaves it piled up in the subduction zone. Geologists thought that any energy generated from a seismic event within the thrust fault would peter out once it hit the soft clay and that a large slip wouldn't happen near the surface.
But clues from past earthquakes suggested otherwise, said Christopher Scholz, a professor of geophysics at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York City. The San Fernando earthquake that occurred in 1971, for example, left behind an unusual pile of debris that anyone can still see today, said Scholz, who was not involved with the new study.
"It's right at the base of a mountain," he said. "The thrust comes out at a low angle, and it looks like [the earthquake] flapped the whole soil layer, just flipped it over below the fault."
How did the earthquake cause such a giant amount of material to flip over if the energy dissipated in the clay?
Geophysicist James Brune, then at the University of Nevada was the first scientist to attempt to answer that question in a 1996 study he published in the Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Science, Scholz said. Brune figured it was the result of some kind of torquing action in the fault. He conducted an experiment using foam rubber that showed the energy of a simulated earthquake propagating down a fault and flipping the tip — as if some large hand were cracking a whip. Read More

Crater Potentially Linked to the Biggest Mass Extinction Event in Earth’s History is Discovered

[Newsweek] Scientists have discovered what they believe is one of the biggest impact craters in the world near the Falklands Islands. They say the crater appears to date to between 270 and 250 million years ago, which, if confirmed, would link it to the world’s biggest mass extinction event, where 96 percent of life on Earth was wiped out.
The presence of a massive crater in the Falklands was first proposed by Michael Rampino, a professor in New York University, in 1992 after he noticed similarities with the Chicxulub crater in Mexico—the asteroid that created this crater is thought to have played a major role in the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
But after a brief report at the Falklands site, very little research was carried out. Now, a team of scientists—including Rampino—have returned to the area to perform an “exhaustive search for additional new geophysical information” that would indicate the presence of an impact crater.
Their findings, published in the journal Terra Nova, suggest the huge circular depression just northwest of the islands is indeed the result of the massive impact of an asteroid or meteorite. The basin, which is now buried under sediments, measures over 150 miles in diameter.
To analyze the site, the team, from the U.S., Argentina and Paraguay, looked at various aspects of the crater, including gravity anomalies and seismic reflection, which allows them to estimate sub-surface properties, along with differences in the chemistry of the rocks.
Their findings were consistent with other impact craters, with certain features being “very similar to that of the Chicxulub multi-ring impact structure.” They found there was a large magnetic anomaly, suggesting significant variation in rocks at the site, as well as gravitational variations “typical of very large impact structures.” Read More

Climate Engineering Completely Manipulating Precipitation

[Geoengineering Watch] For many decades a covert global collaboration of governments has participated in the complete manipulation / disruption of the planet's weather and climate systems. There are many agendas being carried out in our skies by these global powers, none of these agendas are benevolant. The degree to which the weather-makers can manipulate precipitation is difficult to fully comprehend, the effect on populations and the planet has been devastating. The NASA satellite image below reveals extreme aerosol spraying operations being carried out in the Eastern Pacific over major flows of atmospheric moisture migrating toward the West Coast of the US.
Extremely powerful radio frequency / microwave transmissions are another primary means by which the weather makers manipulate heavily aerosolized flows of precipitation. The very revealing animation below clearly illustrates the effects from a powerful radio frequency / microwave transmitter near Beale Air Force Base, California. By these methods those in power can effectively migrate rain over some regions and allow it to come down elsewhere, often in the form of a highly destructive deluge. The climate engineers decide where it rains, and where it does not. They decide how toxic the rain will be, or if a zone will be temporarily cooled down by chemical ice nucleation processes. From drought to record flooding deluges, the geoengineers are the ones pulling the levers. In addition to the climate intervention insanity, it is important to also remember and consider the countless other forms of anthropogenic damage to the climate system and the planet as a whole. 6 Ways To Invite A Spiritual Awakening To Transform Your Life

[Mind Body Green] The spiritual journey—and the subsequent "spiritual awakening" we pursue—always seems to take place in some exotic place or after a dramatic event. Perhaps you think you need to try ayahuasca in Peru or leave your spouse to experience the spiritual awakening you crave?
(Hint: It doesn't have to be so hard.)
You can connect with your spirituality and awaken to the lessons that are meant for you—over and over again throughout your life—from the comfort of your own home. Here are six simple ways to set yourself up for a spiritual awakening:
1. Declutter!
Start by making room! Clear your space of the stuff that you no longer need, the stuff that merely serves as a distraction from your life. And while, yes, decluttering your physical space is important, it's also important to declutter your mind. Take time every day to sit in silence and solitude.
Allow your thoughts to pass without judgment, and slowly watch your mind clear of mental clutter. Meditation allows you to relax into what is presently true—and what is always present for all of us is that there is only love, no fear—and offers you a greater connection to your intuition (another form of spiritual guidance).
2. Examine your beliefs.
Be conscious of and intentional about what you believe. Understand the energy that you're putting not only into your world but into the world at large. And be honest—are your beliefs supporting your spiritual growth? Very often, a spiritual awakening requires letting go of beliefs we've held for our entire lives. But that's the thing about awakening: You have to realize first that you have been sleeping.
3. Expand your mind.
Explore new ideas and differing beliefs. Read books and attend lectures and have conversations with people who have lived different lives. An awakening occurs when you have learned something new—when you have, quite literally, "woken" your mind and your spirit from a slumber you perhaps didn't even know you were in. When you expand your mind to allow in new ideas, beliefs, and possibilities, you increase the opportunity to wake up to a life experience you never knew was possible.
4. Go outside.
There is energy and spirit and magic in the outdoors. So many of us spend our time cooped up inside, sitting behind computer screens, not truly connected to the world (or to ourselves). Take time to reconnect with nature—even in the big cities, you can find trees to touch, gardens to admire, fresh air to breathe. Try not to distract yourself with your phone or even another person's company. Give yourself the quiet and the solitude and the presence that comes with being outside. You may be surprised by what comes alive within you.
5. Take care of yourself.
Eating healthy and staying active is a great way to stay connected to yourself and your higher power, whether that's God, the Universe, or simply your own internal guidance system. When we allow our internal systems (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) to become clogged and bogged down by lethargy and unnatural substances, we block the opportunity for spiritual growth and eventual awakening. Keep your body clean and clear by feeding it well and moving it often, and prepare to receive the messages you seek. Read More
